What Boards Need to Know About Psychosocial Safety

 Board members have a critical role to play in overseeing the management of psychosocial risks. Yet many boards are still unclear on what good governance looks like in this emerging area of workplace health and safety.

While organisations are rapidly building their capability to identify and manage psychosocial hazards, governance capability often lags. In many organisations, boards are presented with reports suggesting psychosocial risks are being managed - policies are in place, surveys have been conducted, and training has been rolled out. On the surface, this can appear reassuring.

However, this type of “paper-safe” evidence of compliance does not necessarily demonstrate that psychosocial risks are being effectively managed in practice. Without a deeper understanding of psychosocial safety, boards may struggle to probe beyond surface-level indicators to verify whether controls are actually working and risks are being reduced.
